Your ‘soul’, that part of you that ‘acts/does’, that part that ‘moves’ or ‘motivates’ the body can listen to, and act on either - that is, can be motivated by your spirit, or your body. And, man can ‘hear/see’ with his physical ‘ears/eyes’, but, can also ‘hear/see’ with his spiritual ‘eyes/ears’. Man is a spirit, posses a soul, and lives in a body. The difference is well worth understanding, although it depends on your theology. must be received with faith by the hearer in order for it to fulfil its mission."Īs an application of this understanding, right now a rhema word of God for me is John 14:26īut the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Hamon, expounding on Romans 10:17 goes on to say that a rhema is "that timely, Holy Spirit-inspired Word from the Logos that brings life, power, and faith to perform and fulfil it. In support of this Hamon cites Ephesians 6:17 "take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God", and points to William Edwy Vine's An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words that explains the passage "Here the reference is not to the whole Bible as such, but to the individual scripture which the Spirit brings to our remembrance for use in time of need, a prerequisite being the regular storing of the mind with scripture".

What consequences (if any) does this have for the understanding of Eph 6:17? A rhema may come while reading the Bible, as God quickens a certain text, or it may come to us through the spoken words of another person." All Christians must live by the logos and receive the rhema as needed." Under this definition the method of receiving rhemas "may come by many ways. …Truth is truth, and the Logos and rhema are one with God." The logos "is the standard of all truth.the rhema, which provides the precise word needed for the specific situation.

…The Logos is like a well of water, and the rhema is a bucket of water from that well. He defines rhema as "a specific word from the Lord that applies it to us individually. Citing Timothy 2:15 Hamon defines the less personal usage " logos" as "the Scriptures as a whole". In Heb 6:5, θεοῦ ῥῆμα, "God's word", is what Christ has said on behalf of God. In John 8:47 Jesus Christ reproaches the Jews who contend with him because they do not listen at all to τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ ("the words of God"), best translated - as the NIV does - with "what God says". In John 3:34 the expression τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ (literally "the words of God") spoken by the Christ, are implicitly contrasted with the words of God spoken by the prophets, because, while God gives the Spirit to the prophets "by measure", he gives the Spirit to the Christ "without measure". In Heb 5:12 we do not find λόγος, but λόγιον, which is best translated "oracle". In all the verses where ῥῆμα ϑεοῦ appears, try to replace "word" with With "message", or "order" or "command", depending on the context In all the verses where λόγος ϑεοῦ appears, try to replace "word"
